Reid Truck and Haul has been in business since the mid 1980s. For more than twenty years they've been delivering goods for most major industries in the nation, with business booming as they traversed the country, in all kinds of weather, for all kinds of clients. During the boom times from 2002 to 2007 Reid Truck & Haul was the mastermind of a top-rated accounts receivable in the trucking industry. Very few customers were behind on their bills, and those customers who were late turned in their overdue payments within an acceptable time frame. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. It was just one year later, in 2008, when the economy in the United States took a sharp decline, and both large and small businesses started to notice the squeeze on their pocketbooks: everyone had suddenly gone silent. Business slowed to a crawl

. And worse yet, Reid had noticed during the early part of 2008 that though the bulk of their clients were always on time with payments, the few late-bloomers there were, had seemingly started to spread this illness. Spring changed to summer, summer changed to fall, and the CEO of Reid, Darryl Kelley, was beginning to feel very uncomfortable indeed whenever he looked at their weekly Accounts Receivable reports. There was a growing list of clients who now owed them back debt.He had already been to the administrators to ask what the actual problem was. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? By his bookkeepers records, this wasn't the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. They couldn't afford to pay him their debt, but they could afford a lesser service, maybe. But after doing the cursory research for this and talking to friends in the field, he found that alas, no, customers of Reid hadn't gone elsewhere. The had just gone!.To Darryl Kelley the situation looked desperate. There were goods to ship, employees to pay, trucks to repair and maintain, and continuous overheads that were very extensive when compared to the funds (or lack of) that were incoming. At night he would speak to his wife Constance and shake his head in frustration.

""Lin, I have a really bad feeling,"" he would say with deep woe.""Well, what do you think it is?"" she would ask.Darryl would stare off for a moment and then close eyes. He could see the fleet of trucks he had purchased over the years. He could see them on the road, delivering good to all his loyal customers. But then a haze would cover his trucks and his vast fleet would vanish to leave just a few. Why couldnt he work out how to resolve this financial problem with his business?""I think I know what it could be,"" said Darryl. ""I've relied too long on the profits I receive from invoices alone. I've let too many of our customers go too long without paying on their bills."" Constance would look at her husband lovingly, and holding his hand would say 'It's such a harsh economy these days and our clients must be having difficulty meeting their responsibilities'.""Constance was trying so hard to support her husband in these worrying times, while Darryl was weighed down with the worry of how he was going to handle this situation he found himself in.The following day Darryl walked into his office with a spring in his step, determined to call each and every client who owed money to Reid Truck & Haul. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. Even though he was doing something to help his company, he knew he had folks on salary to do just this thing. A waste of time - a waste of money - he had the best intentions, but all the while Darryl was realising just how much trouble he was in.Poor Darryl spent the whole morning trying in vain to contact his debtors: they promised to call back, dodged his calls, or made small interest-only payments. He was beginning to feel quite despaired when his secretary knocked on his door.

""Can I have a word with you Darryl?"" she queried, standing in the doorway.

""Sure thing Jeanette, come on in."" Darryl leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Jeanetteerely.""Well, I did a little searching this afternoon and tried to figure out a way out of this mess Darryl."" She pulled a small stack of papers from a folder and set them on the desk before him.""Have you ever heard of factoring?"" she asked.""It sounds vaguely familiar. What is factoring""? he asked.""Well,"" she began, ""Its actually quite simple really.

Basically, factoring invoices means that we would get paid immediately for the loads we haul.""""Immediately?"" Darryl interrupted.""Immediately, yes"" she added, ""It's actually very simple. We can have an expert account manager review our numbers and help us complete a company profile. That profile will also include investigating our accounts receivable aging reports, our existing customer credit limits and so on. In addition, factoring will assist in determining our customers' creditworthiness, independent from their credit relationship with our company. It provides a very broad view.Darryl replied cautiously ""I see - and what happens then?Well, after their review, and were approved for a factoring contract, we can negotiate terms and conditions. You'll be surprised at the amount of flexibility, all dependent upon the credit histories and business volume.

This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. The funding commences once weve arrived at an agreement.Darryl leaned forward and reviewed the paperwork closely.""I don't know, Jeanette - it just sounds too good to be true"", Darryl said quietly.""Yes, I know; that's exactly what I thought at the beginning. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. And they're flexible Darryl,"" she drew a circle around a paragraph on the document before him.""How flexible?"" he asked.""It seems that they personalize their factoring charges so that the amount they're prepared to work with is commensurate with our client's debt and our needs. Apparently they can figure this all out in two to four days.

""""It does all sound pretty good, remembering that we're all tapped out now with loans from the bank last year to repair vehicles, and we all know just how tight money is. We need to keep business rolling as normal and every day were going unpaid, were closer to facing some serious problems in both the short and long term,"" said Darryl. He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Precisely. I think this might just be a way out of the trouble we're in with these folks who owe us money.""Darryl thought about this and agreed with Jeanetteerley. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Reid. Darryl wasn't prepared to lose these relationships just because they were having financial issues at the moment. Darryl knew only too well that the whole economy was floundering, and that it was not going to change overnight. If he didn't handle these debtors in the right way, that unknown amount of time could spell disaster for all of them. Of course he didn't want to lose any more money, but he didn't want to lose business either.""Let me go over this tonight Jeanette, and thankyou."" Jeanette stood up and left Darryl's office, with the nice feeling of knowing that she may just have solved a very serious problem.Darryl sat behind his desk and looked over the details Jeanette had not mentioned in their meeting. What other issues could freight factoring help Reid with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. In fact, Reid could receive up to fifty-percent cash advances upon load pick-ups. Darryl was a typical business man: he despised binding contracts that didn't allow room to breathe, so he was pleasantly surprised to see that the factoring company didn't require a long term contract, that there was no minimum volume required, and that there were no sign-up fees.""I must tell Milton the good news,"" muttered Darryl to himself.Milton is Darryl's son-in-law, and he really admired the ideas behind Reid, so much so that only two years before he had started his own transportation service business. At that time Darryl knew the struggles Milton would face, but he still encouraged him to follow his dream. With the economy the way it was, if an established company such as Reid was struggling then the little guys, like Milton, were going to be in even more trouble. But, maybe the answer for both of them was in freight factoring, and Darryl was going to find out very soon. Some months later, having successfully gone through the entire process of the application, having experts study his credit history and statements and review his accounts receivable, Darryl found that he was starting his journey out of the despair which had been created for him by his delinquent account holders. They took on reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped spending their precious man hours scrambling to collect debt. They took that time and refocused effort to offering competitive prices in new territories. Darryl recalled those dismal months when he wasn't aware of freight factoring, and he shuddered at those memories. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story Barry Ramos let the phone ring on his desk. He let his morning coffee cool and left his cigarette to ash itself in the tray, because he is trying to make the biggest decision ever for his trucking company. Ramos Trucking Company was at a turning point of growth and Barry had to decide if signing with a factoring company was the right way forward.

Barrys father had started as an owner-operator and had grown Ramos Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet over forty years. Yes, they had survived some very difficult times when it appeared like they might go under, and even Barry's mother had jumped into the cab at times to make hauls. His father had worked long enough to see the price of hires drop dramatically during the recession and to see the explosion of fuel prices afterwards. But now things were different: the company was in Barry's hands and he needed to ensure that this business would be left in great shape for his sons.

To move Ramos Trucking Company ahead into the future, he needed a steady cash flow but there was just not enough money to go around. He had employees to pay. They all have families and the usual household bills. A few of the refrigerated trailers really needed some maintenance, and in order to stay competitive he really wanted to invest in specialized haulers to meet the increasing requests for loads of agricultural and energy equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Ramos Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Barry allowed himself a good hard chuckle. His father had been against placing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? Also his father had the habit of teasing all the drivers he caught switching into automatic even though driving in automatic was much more efficient though not manly in his fathers eyes. He knew his father's days were long gone and new technology was very important for the business, like having Qualcomm to reduce communication time for bills of lading.

Barry believed a successful man is always thinking of his next step. How would he take Ramos Trucking to the next level? More importantly, how could he afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. He just finished paying off the small bank loan for installing satellite radio in the trucks for the guys.

But was factoring the answer? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded like a ninth grade math problem and he wondered how this would fit into the trucking business. A factoring company actually purchases your invoices and takes control of your accounts receivable, payment being a certain percentage of the amount invoiced. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without this assistance, you're placed in the position of waiting for payment from your customers, and this can often be thirty days, or more. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Barry had to really consider what his next step was going to be. He had heard of companies charging for same day money transfers, advancing a percentage of the money owed to your business, while the rest is held in a private account if the bill wasn't paid within sixty or more days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! Through the grapevine, hed also heard about how some companies suddenly slipped you onto a sliding scale of percentages even if you had already signed a lengthy contract for maybe 3% or 7% so there you are with 10% coming as a cost to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. He knew he would have to be very careful if he was to avoid any of these shady companies?

However, it all turned out to be very simple. When he called the factoring companies he discovered they were very open about their business practices, and very friendly and helpful. Their customer service actually knew things about their company and spoke in nice clear English so he could understand what was being explained. He was quite happy to sign an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. Nobody charged him for credit checks and they offered him a fuel advance on the pick-up of the load. In fact there were a few companies who offered him a non-recourse factoring program, and this was exactly what he had been hoping for. He was more than happy with the figures he was offered in percentage terms on the freight bills. It was good money.

For Barry it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Barry because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. He knew immediately that there would not be any problems when they were contacted by the factoring company regarding their invoices. His clients wouldnt think poorly of Ramos Trucking and the factoring companies appeared capable of handling the accounts receivable in the same polite manner that his father had used over the years.

Feeling happier now, Barry stepped out of his office to advise his secretary to expect to receive the contract very shortly from the factoring company. There was a new bounce is his step now: he knew instinctively that this new step would raise the future of his company to a new and higher level, and that all the stress from the past could now be put behind him. With the capabilities of this new cash flow, Barry could actually expand Ramos Trucking Company further across the country and perhaps even go international into Canada. His heart felt full knowing his sons wouldnt have to worry about money because of the right decisions he had made for their trucking business.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? Greg Coleman asked as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. The woman sitting across the desk from Greg smiled at him, shaking her head. Not quite, she stated.Greg was the owner of a small trucking company which had fallen on some hard times recently. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Vincent. He named his business Flores Trucking, named after Francis and Gabriel, his two grandfathers. Both of these men had been very hardworking and had set a great example for Vincent.Six months ago disaster struck Vincent's business when two out of his fleet of fifteen trucks were taken off the road.

One was a roll-over and ended up in the trucking graveyard: the other was involved in a serious and costly accident. Greg depended on his full fleet, and missing two trucks was devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.A big problem a lot of trucking companies came across was how bills were paid in the industry. You could go a month or more before bills were completely paid off. In the long run, this wasnt an issue, but if problems arose, you could find yourself in trouble.Greg wasnt a bad owner, and he hadnt messed up. Certain events had occurred that he couldn't possibly have predicted, and now he had to find a way to protect his business and prevent it from ultimate devastation.Thats where the woman across the desk came in. Greg knew she was employed by a Factoring company and that her name was Jill. Greg had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home. She sat there now, and explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We arent giving you money to be paid back later, were buying something from you, and you can buy it back when you can. That way were protected from a complete loss, but youre protected from the outrageous fees you would find in a loan from the bank.Greg nodded. It sounded perfect - perhaps too good?.Jill laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she said. No, I do, I just think it sounds a bit too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Jill nodded. We get that a lot. Listen, Id hate to see you lose your company. You work hard, youve put everything you can into it. Sometimes you need help. Thats what were here for.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. Its right down the road, usually we do it all online, but I didnt mind swinging on by today, said Jill with a smile. Lets see what we can do to help you.And right there and then they created a business profile. Greg completed the form, with Jill offering advice as needed.

The profile filled Jill and her company in on Vincents company, and would help them determine if he was suitable for factoring. In truth, not all companies were. Some businesses are beyond the help of a Factoring company, while other businesses weren't in enough financial stress to warrant it. As Greg completed his form, Jill listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring.Jill took the completed form and placed it in her briefcase. Standing up, she reached over the desk and shook Vincent's hand. He also stood up, and they smiled at each other. Greg walked Jill to the door where they said 'Goodbye', then he went back into his office. His employees were there, seven who worked in the office, and as he sat behind his desk once more he heard the familiar clack of fingers on keyboards, the electronic whine of the copy machine. He leaned back and closed his eyes. He felt so drained: he had been flailing helplessly for so long, he just knew his business was going to collapse and probably take him with it. But now, after speaking to Jill and learning all about Factoring, he felt such a huge relief, like someone had just lifted a huge weight off his shoulders. He sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his graying but still thick black hair. The long nights, where he couldnt sleep. The terrifying panic attacks that occurred regardless of where he was. He could feel it all fading away. He wasnt out of the woods yet, there was still a lot of work to be done, but he could feel it. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems.Greg couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. At twenty-two and straight out of school he had opened a restaurant. It had been really successful. Home cooking in his hometown, and he had done very well. But it wasn't what he really wanted to do. His passion didnt lie with the food industry. He thought about it for a long time, then decided it was time to sell his restaurant. He took half a year off, and in that time he thought to start Flores Trucking. And that's exactly what he did. Once again he built a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. And then the trucks went down, and his success looked to be in flux. He was nearing fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But he couldnt give up. Just the thought of shutting down, cutting his losses, laying off his workers - the whole thing made him physically sick some nights. He didnt know how to say quit. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Vincent's eyes opened, he sat forward in his chair and turned on his computer. He had lots to do. There would be plenty of time later to be thankful, but for now it was time to get back to work.

The key reasons why Truck Corporations Work with Factoring Companies.

As the operator of your own establishment, you may likely be more than perceptive already of the challenge in making sure that capital matters do not become a difficulty down the line. Anyway, the most unfortunate thing that can in all probability develop for your business is to find yourself dragged in a long and hard predicament that leaves you forever looking for the funds you are in need of on an on-going basis.

For any type of establishment in this condition, the dilemma can come for waiting for work to lapse and actually be provided into your account. Statements, checks, and the like could take a long time to actually to be taken care of which can certainly leave you with temporary capital difficulties. Thankfully, there are alternatives out there for industries to examine-- and just one of these is factoring companies.

Factoring agencies will, in exchange for your invoices, provide you with the funds now so you don't have to worry about the waiting time frame that could make paying the bills and getting materialsmore hard. With this sort of setup, invoice factoring can become exceptionally practical for various businesses who ought to get out of a money trap which they have discovered themselves in.

For the reason that, depending on the scale of the task, it can take up to 60 days for some enterprises to get compensated then it's necessary to cover your own back and definitely not leave yourself resources short to settle the costs. After all, how many establishments have two months cash flow just occupying there to cover all their costs till they make money?

This is especially correct of trucking agencies. They have the tendency to handle tons of accounts which means a significant volume of collection time entails company owner themselves. Trying to get paid promptly can eventually become an unbelievable inconvenience and this is exactly why you employ trucking factoring firms who are glad to help out truckers particularly.

As we all determine, trucking is an surprisingly massive market with many companies out there handling hundreds of drivers. Sadly, several of these drivers end up in money troubles since they are still waiting for work from six weeks previously to actually compensate them. When this is the scenario for a trucking organization, turning to factoring providers for reinforcement could be the finest choice left.

This implies that a truck firm can compensate the salaries of the people, keep all the vehicles refilled with fuel and continue to go up, rise and expand without continually waiting for the funds which is taking too prolonged to come in. Trucking Firms running without a factoring system applied are leaving themselves at substantial threat, as contenders cash out promptly and go on to grow.

There's honestly not much to be worried about when it comes to making use of a Factoring firm-- they typically aren't like a bank or somebody who is going to leave you with a large heap of financial debt to repay. You give them legitimate invoices from job you have already finalized , you are just speeding up the repayment system.

In the United states of America, where trucking enterprises grow, factoring providers are not considered getting a loan in any capacity. This private deal then permits both parties to make money and take joy in a comfortable future-- it gives the factoring business a guaranteed asset of income to put into the list and it furnishes the trucking business the required cash that they sweated to earn.

The trucking establishment bestows their accounts to the factoring business. The trucking factoring company then receive the installment payments from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has been all around for centuries and has been used for long times by numerous varied fields-- but none more so than truckers. While you might lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending on who you team up with, it signifies that you are obtaining the finances today and can actually start off putting the funds to perform.

Anyway, an IOU or an invoice is absolutely not going to finance bills, is it? For trucking companies when the finances can be great one day and gone the next, it's up to the drivers to work prudently and to make sure that they are leaving themselves with a considerable quantity of time and finance to get through the week up until they are paid for once more.

So the next occasion your trucking establishment is having some temporary cash flow challenges and you are spending way too much time chasing inactive paying clienteles, why not begin thinking of using a factoring businesses as a way to get your cash and give yourself a more convenient future in the eyes of your trucking staff and your bank balance?

Traditional Bank Loans

Bank loans are an extremely traditional way for a business to get financing. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. For example, a fairly newly established business simply may not have the assets to readily get a loan from a bank, even if they do, the standard collateral for a business loan is the business itself, which means that if you cannot make your loan payment, you risk losing your entire business. Plus, the amount you apply for through the bank is the actual amount that you are going to receive. Once the loan is paid off, you can then apply for another loan if the need arises.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. The finance you receive from the Trucking Factoring company is determined by money already earned by your business, but not yet received. Trucking Factoring companies actually purchase your accounts receivable or at least part of them for a percentage of their total worth, Normally around 80%-95%. The amount of finance you can receive will be based on the amount you have earned and the accounts receivable you are prepared to 'sell.' Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

While not every business can take advantage of Trucking Factoring account financing (you have to have a business that has account receivables) for those that can use this type of financing there are several distinct benefits.

1. There is no debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. This has many benefits including the fact, that this type of financing won't affect either your business credit rating or your personal credit rating. Should the unforeseeable happen and your business fails, you won't have to worry about anyone coming after your personal as well as your business assets to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. No Collateral Required. Another benefit of using a Trucking Factoring company instead of a traditional loan is that you aren't required to provide collateral to the Trucking Factoring company in order to secure financing, because the company buys the accounts receivables; not loans you money based on them. Plus, the state of your credit rating is not an issue; however the Trucking Factoring company will run a credit check on your clients whose accounts receivable are being offered for financing. This makes it easier for fledgling businesses to get the financing they need through a Trucking Factoring company (as long as their accounts receivables are in good order) then from a bank, who may not feel that you have been in business long enough to be worth the risk of issuing you a loan.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. Using a Trucking Factoring company means that you'll get the finance quicker. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. Borrowing from a bank begins with vast amounts of paperwork, the loan must be underwritten, and this can take ages before you're notified if the loan has been approved.

4.You receive interest up-front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So not only are you relieved of those monthly loan payments, but you also don't have to worry about the building up of interest, as every penny in the account is yours to spend on the business.

As you can see from the above, there are some great benefits to financing through a Trucking Factoring company, and not through a traditional bank loan. In addition, there are other benefits that a Trucking Factoring company can offer you, outside the scope of a bank. The most important benefits is that once you sell your accounts receivable to the factory company, you don't have to take time away from running your business to collect the money owed from reluctant to pay customers. Since these accounts belong to the Trucking Factoring company, this is now their job. Trucking Factoring companies are very good at collecting these debts, saving you the time and effort that you need to devote to your growing company.

Another bonus is that, because the Trucking Factoring company has evaluated the quality of your customers' credit before buying the accounts receivable, you learn valuable information regarding your customers, like which ones are likely to pay, and which ones are less likely to pay.A Trucking Factoring company is not the only method of gaining access to finance for the running and growing of your business, however it does offer a financing option well worth considering.
